All
of our farm vets are Local Veterinary Inspectors licensed by the
Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF). In this capacity
we have two main tasks: to ensure animal welfare and to maintain
food safety and public health.
Our
major role in animal welfare involves the inspection of animals
at markets to ensure that they are healthy and fit for sale. Some
of us also have special duties regarding sheep scab, which can be
a major welfare problem.
Much
of our role in public health involves carrying out routine disease
surveillance, for example testing cattle for the presence of tuberculosis
or taking samples to be tested for the presence of brucellosis.
We are required to investigate cases where anthrax may possibly
have been the cause of death and we also have a role in BSE surveillance.
