Laboratory Services
We have a well equipped practice laboratory which is staffed by two trained technicians.

We are proud of the speed with which we can report results, some within hours, many on the same day and some which take time to culture, i.e. forty–eight hours.

Some of the tests we perform are listed below:

Milk Samples:
Bacterial culture, colony counts, hygiene evaluations, antibiotic sensitivity tests, test for presence of antibiotic in milk. For bulk tank cell counts, diagnosis of disease and mineral estimates we send the samples to other laboratories.

Faeces Samples:
Bacterial cultures, both aerobic and anaerobic, antibiotic sensitivity tests. Worm egg counts, liver fluke and lungworm diagnoses, coccidia and acid fast staining. Eliza tests for rotavirus, coronavirus and E. coli K99 and stains for cryptosporidia.

Blood Samples:
Full haematology, serology to measure liver and kidney functions, estimate muscle damage, measure mineral levels, energy and protein status. Stains for blood parasites.

Urine Samples:
Microscopic evaluation and bacterial culture.

Hair, Wool and Skin Samples:
Examination for fungi, parasites and bacteria.

Other Tissue Samples:
Microscopical examination and culture.

Where large numbers of metabolites are to be measured, such as a metabolic profile, we may send the samples to another laboratory for reasons of economy. We will send some samples to the Veterinary Laboratories Agency, run by the MAFF, where specialised tests are required or it is a statutory requirement that tests be carried out by VLA.

We have invested heavily in equipment so that we can provide a rapid confirmation of our diagnosis.
