The
Equine Hospital
An increasing demand for better surgical and medical facilities
led to the development of the purpose built Equine hospital, which
opened on 1st January 1999. In 2004 we were accredited with hospital
status and so the improved standard and range of facilities now
enables us to encourage
increased
referrals
from
the other equine
veterinary surgeons. We aim to offer an accessible referral service
to the highest ethical and professional standards working closely
with referring veterinary surgeons.
In
the hospital there are excellent examination areas, all with
rubber floors. The main examination room has stocks for endoscopy,
reproductive
examination, standing surgery etc. and is serviced by the adjoining
nurses' room.
We
have a large dedicated Xray room with overhead mounted Siemans
unit with 800 mA , 150 kV output , linked with an automatic processor
and Fugi digital capsula developer .There are viewing areas with
CR consoles and traditional viewing screens. We also have mobile
and portable units for use in surgery and for outside premises.
Radiography of anaesthetised horses can be undertaken.
There
are three ultrasound machines with linear and sector capability
with a frequency range of 2.5 to 8.0 mHz to cover requirements
for reproductive, muscoskeletal and internal medicine use. This
includes a Sigma 330 which is a multimodality ultrasound system
consisting of excellent 2D and M-mode image quality with super
Doppler and CFM sensitivity.
For
endoscopy we have a range of varying lengths and diameters of endoscopes
with video capability to enable examination of the upper and lower
respiratory tract in all sizes of horses and foals. Direct endoscopy
of the sinuses, cytoscopy, gastroscopy and hysteroscopy can also
be performed.
- High
energy focussed shockwave device for the treatment of many musculoskeletal
problems.
-
Metron computer analysis for foot balance and ultrasonographic
tendon evaluation.
There
is a dedicated surgery suite with large theatre, separate induction
and recovery rooms, nurses' area and pre-op preparation area. The
theatre has pipe line gases with a freestanding hydraulic table
with lift and tilt facilities. All horses under general anaesthesia
are monitored with ECG and direct arterial blood pressure measurement.
Stabling
on the new and adjoining buildings gives accommodation for up to
20 horses.
